Editing and Proofreading Services

Line editing comes after developmental editing and before copy editing. It addresses specific issues at the sentence and paragraph level while maintaining your author voice. We will review your writing for:

• Tone, flow, and clarity
• Obvious clichés
• Word choice
• Filler words and filter phrases
• Repetition and redundancy
• Changes in tense
• Unnatural dialogue
• Unnecessary words
• Run-on sentences
• Confusing narrative
• Continuity problems (was your MC wearing blue in the paragraph above but is now wearing green?)
• Fact-checking

This service includes two editing passes. All edits will be made to your manuscript using Track Changes and Comments in Microsoft Word, using The Chicago Manual of Style and the Merriam-Webster Dictionary for reference.

Cost: $0.013 per word

Copy editing comes between line editing and proofreading. It's where we make sure those annoying commas are in the right spot and you're punctuating your dialogue tags and action beats (yes, there's a difference!) correctly. We'll be reviewing:

• Grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors
• Syntax
• MINOR fact-checking (please don't expect me to become the neurosurgeon)
• Flagging for repetition, redundancy, and plot holes 
• Continuity problems (was your MC wearing blue in the paragraph above but is now wearing green?)
• Dialogue punctuation
• Consistency in character names and details, spelling, font, capitalization, numeration, etc.
• Formatting issues (extra spaces or tabs, subtitle consistency, chapter headings, etc.)

This service includes two editing passes. All edits will be made to your manuscript using Track Changes and Comments in Microsoft Word, using The Chicago Manual of Style and the Merriam-Webster Dictionary for reference. 

Cost: $0.01 per word

Proofreading is the last (not the only) line of defense for those pesky mistakes. At this point, your book should have been through a line edit, copy edit, and perhaps even a first round of proofreading—if you use more than one proofreader! We'll be searching your manuscript for:

• Obvious typos and misued words
• Missing words
• Continuity problems (was your MC wearing blue in the paragraph above but is now wearing green?)
• Consistency in spelling, punctuation, font, capitalization, numeration, etc.
• Basic formatting issues (extra spaces or tabs, subtitle consistency, etc.)

This service includes one editing pass. All edits will be made to your manuscript using Track Changes and Comments in Microsoft Word, using The Chicago Manual of Style and the Merriam-Webster Dictionary for reference. 

Cost: $0.007 per word

We will review your writing for the entire list of services mentioned under line editing and copy editing.

This service includes TWO editing passes: one streamlined pass for line edits AND copyediting, and one final pass to make sure all errors were addressed. 

All edits will be made to your manuscript using Track Changes and Comments in Microsoft Word, using The Chicago Manual of Style and the Merriam-Webster Dictionary for reference.  

Cost: $0.018 per word

PLEASE NOTE: A streamlined initial edit that includes both line and copy edits simultaneously can be extensive and result in several thousand edits/suggestions. Brace for impact.

 An additional proofreading pass can be added at any time during the editing process if you feel a third pass is needed to make sure we catch as much as possible.

Cost for an additional third pass: $0.002 per word

Are you in need of both copy editing and line editing but are on a tight budget? Listen, I hear you! Brazen Hearts Author Services offers a discounted partial line editing service that can be added to your copy editing package.

A partial line edit would target the big-picture items (filler words, filter phrases, modifier drama, word choice, repetition, etc.). But instead of fixing/pointing out every single case, I would point out the first 3-5 instances with examples of how to fix them, then leave the bulk of the work for you to fix using Find and Replace or your own "eagle eyes."

This service will be completed during the TWO editing passes included in copy editing and will be completed simultaneously in the first pass—not as its own third pass.
